April 25, 2016, Beijing China. The Emgrand GS,Geely Automobile Holdings’ (Geely Auto) first urban crossover SUV, was unveiled today at the Beijing Auto Show. The Emgrand GS is based upon the Emgrand Crossover Concept that was first shown at the Beijing Auto Show in 2014.
Peter Horbury, Vice President of Design atGeely Auto, who developed the Emgrand GS along with the company’s 300-strong team of designers, commented: “We wanted to make a vehicle that was designed specifically for the urban consumer, people that like the high seating positionand feeling of power that a traditional SUV would bring but without that added bulk that just isn’t needed in packed city environments.
“At Geely, we always listen to our customers, and in the case of the Emgrand GS one of the big demands was for ayouthful crossover that would be aimed at those born post 1985,” he added. “These post ‘85ers demanded the very latest in aesthetics both internally and externally to match their own independent streaks.”
The Emgrand GS’s exterior was built around a sports personality, hence the GS’s name, which stands for Geely Sports. The GS’s headlights resemble a cyclist’s eyewear when tucked down into anaerodynamic pose, with the cyclists ‘back’ flowing through the rear of thevehicle creating an aerodynamic pose and bringing the co-drag efficient down to 0.33 – putting it on par with some of the greatest sports vehicles of all time.
The Emgrand GS’s interior was crafted around the driver; the high beltline gives a feeling of safety without compromising safety around the vehicle, and the dashboard has the same floating bridge elements that featured in other Geely Auto vehicles such as the GC9 and the Bo Yue. The leather seats provide the comfort level required to fully cocoon the passengers in the vehicle and provide a higher level of safety, whilst the full glass moon roof brings substantial amounts of light into the cabin.
Throughout the Emgrand GS’s development phase, Geely Auto’s designers and engineers worked together to create a vehicle that had the ride height of an SUV but with the handling capability of a passenger car. The Emgrand GS is based upon an updated version of the Geely FE platform which has been widely used within Geely. The same platform underpins the New Emgrand sedan, which itself has sold over 900,000 units globally since its introduction in 2009. Swedish automotive engineering company LeanNova was also instrumental in giving the Emgrand GS segment-leading handling.
1.3T and 1.8L naturally aspirated engines, both of which can be paired with a 6 speed manual or a 6 speed DCT (Dual ClutchTechnology) automatic gearbox, are the core powertrain options for the EmgrandGS. The 1.3T engine was fully developed by Geely Auto and produces 133BHP and 185Nm of torque. This 1.3T was named Engine of the Year by a consortium of Chinese automotive media titles in 2014.
The Emgrand GS doesn’t just sport a highly functional design; it is also packed with technology such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto technologies to keep mobile users connected while on the go.
In terms of safety the Emgrand GS makes use of the same technologies that have been used on the flagship Geely GC9 and the BoYue SUV. Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning and Urban Safety Crash Recognition Systems are all featured on the Emgrand GS, making it one of the safest vehicles on the road.
May 4, 2016 has been set aside as the Emgrand GS’s launch date at a unique and novel online launch event. Pricing ofthe Emgrand GS has been put to popular vote on the official Geely WeChat account where netizens are invited to vote on the price of several models. The official retail price of the vehicle will be announced on May 4 at a launch event.
