GeelyAuto leads way with methanol vehicle pilot

19/05/2015

In late April, Geely Auto deployed a first-of-its-kind fleet of methanol-fuelled taxis in the southern Chinese city of Guiyang in cooperation with the municipal government. The introduction of the 150 vehicles to Guiyang’s transport system was welcomed by the city’s mayor as a“transformational” moment for its low-carbon development. The project will be followed by similar initiatives in Shanghai municipality, Jinzhong in Shanxi province, and Baoji in Shanxi province. Geely Auto became the first auto manufacturer in China to begin conducting research and development into methanol vehicle solutions in 2005, and has since acquired dozens of patents. Its Englon SC7 sedan was the first methanol-fuelled car to receive approval from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Scientific studies indicate that methanol-fuelled cars generate as much as 80% fewer PM2.5 emissions than traditional gasoline-powered equivalent sand cost an average of 40-50% less to fuel. Methanol-powered vehicles are one pillar of Geely Auto’s diversified new-energy strategy, which also encompasses ethanol, CNG, gas-electric hybrid, plug-in hybrid, pure-electric, and extended-range solutions.Geely is proactively working with partners across China to spread the use of methanol-fuelled taxis nationwide.
