From being a scrappy little automotive start up to being a car manufacturer that has global credentials, Geely Auto is moving in the right direction. The first concrete look at where Geely Design are taking the future of the brand was revealed with the Preface Concept sedan at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show.

Geely Auto’s rise to success has been defined by its strength in the sedan market which allowed it to later pivot to SUV’s and more recently to MPV’s. It’s China’s love affair with compact and mid-size sedans that have allowed Geely to grow, the first sedan that Geely made was the Vision sedan, a compact no frills product that put Geely on the map.

It’s China’s love affair with compact and mid-size sedans that have allowed Geely to grow, the first sedan that Geely made was the Vision sedan, a compact no frills product that put Geely on the map.

The next addition to the sedan family would be the Emgrand range, a model that essentially became the Chinese ‘Corolla’, selling across dozens of countries and counting nearly 2.5 million sales to date with the range being continuously improved upon each year.

The next step in Geely’s sedan evolution is to use the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) that was jointly developed by Volvo and Geely to spearhead the generation of compact sedans from the Geely Auto brand. CMA has been used by Geely Auto’s sister brands where it has received several accolades including Car of the Year for the Volvo XC40 and was used by LYNK & CO for the 01 model which became the fastest selling car in history, which received 6,000 orders in just 137 seconds after it launched.

To showcase the next steps in Geely’s evolution, the brand unveiled the Preface Concept at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show and true to Geely history they have kept it close to what a future production model might look like.

Geely Design Shanghai took the lead in developing the Preface concept under the watchful eye of Shanghai Design Chief Guy Burgoyne, who then introduced the concept at Geely’s press conference. According to Guy, the Preface concept uses the CMA architecture to create strong proportions that have appeared on previous Geely vehicles. But rather than a return to the past, the creation of Preface was more like a gravitational slingshot within the Geely Expanding Cosmos design identity, completing an orbit and accelerating into the future.

Thanks to the modular nature of CMA, where designers and engineers are able to make it wider, taller, or lower, the Preface Concept has benefited from a wide wheel track which gives it a perfect balanced wheel to wheel arch relationship, resulting in both muscular shoulders and powerful fenders.

The major attraction point would be the clamshell doors with frameless windows that add a high-tech futuristic element to the model, attracting the attention of a new generation of consumers. Will these make it to the production version? Guy remains coy, but argues that many other features will certainly see production lines in the future.

So when will the Preface become a production car? No time frame has been set, but we have the first concrete look at where Geely Design are taking the future of the brand.
